“Bandera Azul” Project

 

 

The Bandera Azul (Blue Flag) Project is a prestigious award given to any
Costa Rican beach, town, or province that passes a rigorous annual examination of criteria that determines the cleanliness of the area's environment.
The criteria that determine the awarding of Bandera Azul include: the sanitary quality of the ocean water and potable water, treatment of domestic residual waters, management of industrial waste waters, cleanliness of the beaches, environmental education, and administration and security.
Periodic examinations of water quality are performed by “AEA” and the central laboratory of Costa Rica throughout the year. The incentive of this award is huge, providing both pride in the community and touristic attraction.
